Absentee bid

An absentee bid is placed before the auction starts by a buyer who cannot attend in person. The bidder, sometimes called an absentee bidder, gives the auction house a maximum, and a member of staff or the auctioneer bids on their behalf during the sale, only as much as needed and never above that maximum. If two absentee bids are equal, the first one received usually takes precedence.
