Paddle

When you register for a live auction you receive a bidder number, often printed on a card or a handheld paddle. You raise it to bid, and the auctioneer or clerk records the winning number next to each hammer price. That number links every purchase in the sale to your registration, which is how the auction house knows whom to invoice.
